DESCRIPTION

Polarized light can wash out images with silvery reflected light and our ND64 + CPL Filter Plus+ cuts out 99.9% of reflected light from water, glass, and non-metallic surfaces, uncovering bolder colours.

Our ND64 + CPL also blocks a fixed 6 f-stops of light entering your camera, allowing you to use slower shutter speeds for long exposure and wider apertures for shallower depth of field effects in bright light.

Our Plus+ range features 20 layers of nano-coating providing easier cleaning and better protection against water, oil and scratches. These layers also provide a higher maximum light transmission and a more consistent transmission curve for sharper images, finer colours and greater depth.

How to Use

ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+

1/5

Find your filter size
Inquisitively search lens for diameter symbol. Ø often marks the spot. The diameter you seek may be accompanied by a number – Ø58 or Ø58mm. Look to the side and the front – this precious number is your filter size. Be warned: your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.
ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+

2/5

Place flat and screw clockwise
Carefully behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten that which goes on must one day come off.
ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+

3/5

Twist it until you see it
Tenderly rotate the outer rim of your CPL Filter and watch as the level of polarization changes.
ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+

4/5

Slow your shutter
The 3 f-stop darkening of your images allows you to slow your shutter speed for motion blur effects.
ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+

5/5

Open your aperture
Or, you can adjust for the 3 f-stop darkening by opening up your aperture, which creates a shallower depth of field. You can also combine both exposure setting adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which range of CPL should I buy?

Let the quality of your lens guide your choice. Or simply go for the best – our professional Plus+ range.

Urth has two different ranges of filters: Urth (our premium range) and Urth Plus+ (our professional range). Let the quality of your lens guide your decision. If you’ve invested in a professional-quality lens, we recommend you match its quality with our Plus+ range. Our Urth range is the perfect option for all other standards of lens.

How do I get the most out of my CPL?

Use the 90-degree rule, then back it off a bit.

To achieve the strongest polarization possible, the reflected light source needs to be at 90-degrees to your CPL. To check this, make an L-shape using your thumb and index finger. Point your thumb at the lens and wherever your index finger is pointed, that is the angle that will achieve maximum polarisation. Sometimes at full polarization, the effect can look unrealistic so we suggest you back it off a bit for a slightly softer polarization.

Can I use your CPL with wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Yes, we recommend our Plus+ range for telephoto lenses.

Make sure you have the right size filter and you’re all set. All our filters are designed with a super slim rim to minimise any vignetting that can occur with wide-angle lenses. Because of the amount of glass in a telephoto lens, Our Plus+ range will provide the best image quality.

What's the difference between circular and linear polarizing filters?

A circular polarizer blocks reflected light from any angle while a linear polarizer only blocks reflected light from one direction.

A CPL offers more versatility and works better with digital cameras. Both linear and circular polarizers look the same, and they both do the same thing – reduce reflections on non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass and wet surfaces, and they increase colour saturation too. A CPL filter is essentially a linear polariser with an extra glass element that allows you to adjust your lens filter to block polarised light from different directions.

Does a CPL affect my exposure?

Yes but only a little – 1.33 f-stops.

A CPL filter will reduce the amount of light reaching your sensor by about 2 f-stops.

Which ND filter should I buy?

The best ND filter for your photography will depend on the effects you want to achieve.

The first choice you need to make it whether to go for a Fixed ND Filter or a Variable ND Filter. A variable ND filter offers more options, which is great if you’re shooting in changing light conditions, or just starting out with ND filters. A fixed ND provides a specific light reduction and works better with telephoto and wide-angle lenses. The next choice you need to make is the level of light reduction you want. The higher the ND number, the more light it blocks from reaching your camera sensor.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do I need to get an ND if I already have a CPL?

Yes, if you want more than a 2 f-stop reduction of light.

While CPL filters polarize light to remove reflections and increase colour saturation, ND filters reduce the amount of light that makes it through to your camera’s sensor, which opens up opportunities to experiment with depth of field and motion blur effects even in bright light.

What are the best ND filters for wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Our whole range of Fixed ND Filters work with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Our ND filters have ultra-slim rims to avoid any vignetting issues. Our Fixed ND Filters are all in our professional Plus+ range and use the world’s best glass, making them perfect for wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

What do the ND Filter numbers mean?

The higher the number, the more light it blocks from entering your camera.

The 4 of our ND4 Filter Plus+ refers to the amount of light blocked. An ND2 reduces light transmittance to a quarter. An ND8 reduces it to an eighth, an ND1000 reduces it to 1/1000th.

"This is my favourite lens filter ever. Screw this on your lens and magically conjure golden hour any time of day. Cutting 6 stops AND polarized light completely tames the light even in the middle of the day." Glenn bought our CPL + ND64 Plus+.

Excellent piece of kit

As ever, packaging and delivery were great, so the filter arrived in excellent condition. It does exactly what I wanted and removes any (minor) hassle of mixing filters. I can be a bit indecisive when shooting so it's great to help me focus more on what I'm shooting, and less on adjusting the filters, too much.
